A gold anklet is considered the height of ornamental leg decoration for Indian women. These come in many varieties, some with personal details and add-ons, complicated carvings and other creative touches. Anklets are most commonly formed from flat sheets of gold, and are usually made two to three inches bigger than the ankle size so that ti will be comfortable to wear.

Kundan and Lac works are preferred for commemoration occasions like marriages and births. They are beautifully enhanced with gold plated beads and colored pearls. In Indian tradition, a gold anklet signifies wealth and power. Chunky and more bulky pieces are popular in regions of the Middle East where they are also status symbols. Modern gold anklets are available in contemporary designs, and the cost varies according to the carat and weight of gold used, and the extent of the intricate work done on the piece.

When it comes to jewelry like anklets, most people think of it as purely shallow. These products have no redeeming value aside from the fact they make their owner's pretty. No real benefit, no real function. Throughout the years however, some rocks and stones used within jewelry have lead people to believe they had healing capabilities. One rock that is really getting some press these days for its alleged healing capacity is baltic amber.

Baltic amber anklets and necklaces are being scooped up by parents everywhere as a possible method for naturally alleviating teething pain. With Orajel issuing warnings that their products could be fatal for certain babies (which they've known about for years by the way), and hylands teething pills off the market, there isn't much left to reach for in the middle of the night when your baby is wailing in pain.

If you can afford one of the pieces of jewelry, I say it is worth a shot. Just make sure you buy a piece that is knotted in between the beads, so that if it breaks beads won't go anywhere. Additionally, make sure the necklace has a break away clasp and is tight fitting, like a choker. Do not let babies sleep in necklaces or chew on them, they only are meant to come in contact with the skin. Anklets are considered by most to be safe during sleep, if covered in a sock.

The British Museum is showing a new exhibition called Afghanistan: Crossroads of the Ancient World, which is a touring exhibit that will stop in nine western capitals including Paris and Washington DC. On display are 2,000 year old pieces of jewelry, including gold anklets and hair clips, that were discovered at ancient grave sites in the country.

In particular, the grave site of a young woman was discovered with several thousand pieces of worked gold, including bracelets and headdress ornaments, golden buckles set with turquoise, and hundreds of gold pieces stitched to her clothing like sequins. Archaeologist know little about the young woman, or why she and the others buried around her were so lavishly decorated. One of the most exquisite pieces on display is an intricate gold crown that is designed to fold up, perhaps for easy carriage.
