Ancient Gold Anklet

Ancient Gold Anklet

The British Museum is showing a new exhibition called Afghanistan: Crossroads of the Ancient World, which is a touring exhibit that will stop in nine western capitals including Paris and Washington DC. On display are 2,000 year old pieces of jewelry, including gold anklets and hair clips, that were discovered at ancient grave sites in the country.

In particular, the grave site of a young woman was discovered with several thousand pieces of worked gold, including bracelets and headdress ornaments, golden buckles set with turquoise, and hundreds of gold pieces stitched to her clothing like sequins. Archaeologist know little about the young woman, or why she and the others buried around her were so lavishly decorated. One of the most exquisite pieces on display is an intricate gold crown that is designed to fold up, perhaps for easy carriage.
